Diya can be defined as a small earthen lamp that is specially lit on Diwali for pujan and decoration purposes. A cotton wick is used in diyas, and oil or ghee serves as the burning fuel. Diyas are plain and colored, big and small, simple and fancy, and so. Different types of diyas are appropriate for different applications. Children could also make their own diyas as a fun activity on Diwali. This could be done by using clay or dough. It is better not to use a wool wick in ghee diyas.

As the festive season approaches near, markets get flooded with various types of gifts, decoration, and puja items. The crafted and designer diyas are one of the big attractions in such markets.

this is a labor sitting alone on the old delhi street, waiting for some work to come.
there were some street children playing out there and he just smiled to them and the moment i clicked my shutter.

this is a street shot of a vendor who sells tea on the road side.
if we see in a broader perspective, we all are hunting for our true identity. we are always different with everyone, many faces of one face changing with person to person.
sometimes i really think, why i have been sent on earth, what was the need? in what process we all are in? Why I am me, and you are you? why not you are someone else? a tough question yet to answer.

This is a fogy morning in Vrindavan and he is a beggar on the way to holy river Yamuna, if devotees visit the river today then he may earn a little but there is hardly anyone in such winter in fog.

The mark on his forhead called a "Tilak" made out of "Chandan" (Sandal Wood). he is a Vaishnav (A devotee to Lord Krishna)and this Tilak is the prominent mark of Vaishnavs. as Vrindavan is a holy city and belongs to Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha, you find mostly Vaishnav's here.

Dramatic and startling colour—initially achieved with vegetable and natural dyes—plays an important role in Goan architecture. Colour was decorative and used purely to create a sensation. With a colour wash, the house looked "dressed" and therefore displayed the economic well-being of the family that lived in it. Here art in architecture performed a social function. However, this was not completely a matter of individual choice, since during Portuguese rule the owner of the house could be fined if his house was not painted.

I have just got to know about the meaning of written words in English..

"LOJA = A Store"
"CAMOTA= must be the name of the Store"
TINTAS = Ink"
FERRO = Iron"

it means this was an old store who used to deals in ink, iron and other stuff. Now it has been closed.

Raadhey... ", the typical form of address in Vrindavan (Land of Radha, beloved of Lord Krishna)may mislead a wayfarer to think that women get the pride of place in this land of piety, which abounds in temples dedicated to Krishna and his favourite gopika, Radha.
This is only one layer of a façade the ever-vibrant town wears.
Thousands of widowed women lead miserable lives in the dharmashalas and choultries of Vrindavan, completely at the mercy of the owners of these places.
The street widows, who cannot afford board and lodging, often spend their last days on the roadsides or in shelters.

The majority of these women, discarded as social outcasts, migrated from West Bengal and have been living here for several decades. Addressed respectfully as Mai, meaning mother, these women are the worst victims of social inequity and neglected social responsibility.

This shot is one of those widows from West Bengal, most of them earns 3 rupees (7 or 8 cents) for four hour's bhanjan singing in a dharmshaala in the morning and same they earn in the evening.
You can calculate their earnings which is not more than 15 cents a day. they have to pay a room rent also which is nearly 600 to 700 rupees a month which is quite a big amount for them so 5 or 6 widows shares a single room.

What is the fate of these ladies. How they are responisble if their husbands died earlier than them?

Incredible Goa

Sharp memories of romantically dark beach shacks of north Goa, fenni and wine hangovers, harsh, sand-scrubbed bodies, lovely roads, humble gestures are reasons to go back to Goa after my recent visit.
Goa is a flood of memories, of associations and of images. Long after I have returned to other shores, I can taste the salt on my lips, feel the sand between my toes, smell the Goan spices, hear the waves as they crash, see the footprints left behind and know the joy of living. The sounds of young voices, the whisper of the wind, waves that froth as they collapse at your feet, nights under the stars. Crumbling sandcastles and the dreams that remain...seashells that carry the sound of the ocean...the glorious colours of light as the sun sets into the sea...the warmth of waters that envelop you...horizons that stretch forever.
last week I found me and my dear wife flight-hopping to Goa from Delhi, prepared to stay at the beach with a good book,and my camera to click a wonderful sunsent at Miramar beach..

Thrown Out

these lines are not only of Dinanath, there are several of such cases, where children throw their parents out of the house like dirt and dust.

"they just threw me out of the house, saying I had nothing to do with them, i am useless"

i have met several of left alone old people in old age homes, private rented rooms, near temples and on railway stations. everytime these lonely painful eyes disturbs me, bring loads of questions that why don't we handle the age? Is this age an actual problem? or do we count their existance as an invasion in our private life or freedom? what is there behind all this? why don't we understand that we too have to come across the same one day. Age will not leave us alone! are we ready to take the same treatment from our children? because i have read that children are big observers and they do the same as their parents does!

Yeh Hasin Wadiyaan [ A film on Sex workers of Delhi]

Friends, i am showing a small part of my new work, this is just a small showreel of actual film. We have used the hidden camera in this particular segment. we were not allowed to use camera inside the GB road Kothas (a street of sex workers in delhi). one policeman was with us but he warned me to switch off the camera otherwise pimps may damage the camera and other equipments. pimps are very dangeours at this part, they have blades and knifes with them and they do not feel fear to use them.

I showed them that the camera is off and in between I switched it on again.

you may see some jerks or unbalanced shot because i couldnot see the actual frame whatever is shot is all hidden.

No one else has taken these kind of inside shots up till now.

Thousands of Hindu widows lead miserable lives inVrindavan on doles earned from bhajan singing. TOURISTS and pilgrims returning from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh never fail to visit Vrindavan further up on the banks of the Yamuna, for this is the place to reconnect mentally with the mythological tale of Krishna's rasa leela with gopikas or milkmaids. The narrow lanes of this pilgrim centre are crammed with cows, vendors of lassi (sweetened curd whisked to smooth consistency), mendicants, alms-seekers and, more starkly, Hindu widows clad in white.
The majority of these women, discarded as social outcasts, migrated from West Bengal and have been living here for several decades.
So much so that Vrindavan has come to acquire a horrific nickname, "city of widows". The women congregate every morning and evening at the innumerable bhajan ashrams to sing devotional songs. Bhajan singing is compulsory if they are to receive a dole of Rs.6 a day and some meagre ration. Alternately, they throng the streets near the temples to beg for sustenance. Perhaps even as they chant the name of God, these nameless women constantly worry about food and shelter.

i just recieved a Press release from His Holiness "Dalai Lama" in which he said "I am deeply concerned over the situation that has been developing in Tibet following peaceful protests in many parts of Tibet, including Lhasa, in recent days. These protests are a manifestation of the deep-rooted resentment of the Tibetan people under the present governance."Yesterday at 9:30am at Kirti monastery (Amdo province) which has remain completely sealed off by Chinese military, over a thousand monks fled the tight security and were joined by another thousand layperson-protestors outside the Monastery compound. Tear gas was used on the demonstrators and gun shots were heard according to a reliable source.

One very reliable source has confirmed that many of the dead bodies have been stashed in front of a Public Security Department office in Lhasa. Reliable sources have confirmed that at least 100 people were killed on 14th March 2008 in Lhasa.China set a "surrender deadline", listed deaths and showed the first extensive television footage of rioting in Lhasa on Saturday, signaling a crackdown after the worst unrest in Tibet for two decades. Meanwhile, the main Tibetan exile group said Chinese police killed about 100 demonstrators and injured many more during the protests.I am trying to cover all the demosntration here in India, we personaly feel very sad about our Neighbouring country.

Amazing Lady

This is an amazing Old lady from Uttranchal hills. i have done 6 or 7 shots with her. No one from country side knows from where she belongs to and her name either. Even she was quite and mum all the time. i insisted her many times but never got any answer except her thoughtful eyes and expression, then a small boy from jungle told me that she is Mad and according to an old story she has lost her home and son somewhere in jungle. these days people use to throw stones on her.

This poor man has this roadside shop under sky, he sells cigrettes and gutkas for his earning. I have shot this picture in a Hot Summer day of June, when it was difficult to come outside on road and this fellow is sitting and waiting for any customer to come.
